Chapter Two

The Campaign Trail

Meanwhile, thirty-six hundred miles away – Thomas J. Spade stood before a group of his acid-disfigured supporters, revelling in the attention he attracted as he prepared to speak.

His supporters and followers stood by in the light falling acid rain under protective umbrellas covered with tinfoil with a slick coating of cooking oil. Water and oil don’t mix, and the rain slides off the umbrellas to the ground where it hissed and popped and made weird marks on the asphalt.

A ravenous looking group they were, who carried assault rifles over their shoulders, and expressing their unwavering love for their leader. Under normal circumstances the carrying of deadly weapons at an open-air campaign rally would have been prohibited by law. But these were far from normal circumstances. CNN was down, Fox News was fucked, MSNBC had bought the farm, and the national newspapers had all disbanded. Both big and small purveyors of the news alike could no longer get their messages out. The New York Times, The New York Post, The Washington Post, and scores of others were simply now gone. Which left the only news out there, the only truth, coming from the lips of a megalomaniac elitist.

Thomas J. Spade stood proudly on the campaign stage that was canopied by a tin foil awning. Yes, he looked every bit the politician standing up there in his three-piece Armani suit and big wide PR smile, his bright white teeth dazzling his admirers. Public Relations was definitely his affair. He looked out and surveyed the crowd.

“My fellow Americans, Eli Benning is no longer in contention. He has respectfully bowed out of this race by way of death.” The crowd threw their hands up in victory and rejoiced.

“But let me be clear here. Even though we are all suffering greatly from this foreign virus that has invaded our land, along with numerous shutdowns around the country because of it, let me state that there is still an election to be won.”

The rain started falling harder, blanketing the ground in a slick sheen that hissed and sizzled as it ran down into the drainage system. The streets were littered with victims of the rain’s torment. Body upon body lay strewn in the streets. The bodies were bloated and rotting, their rancid odor filling the air. A bulldozer had had to be used to shovel the decaying corpses off to the side of the field where the rally was taking place, just so the stage could be built.

And it wasn’t just people that were dead from the virus and the rains. There were also a multitude of dead animals; rodents, rats and mice, and pets still on leashes attached to the hand of their onetime owner and caregiver. There were mounds of fizzing insects, spiders and cockroaches, grasshoppers and praying mantis. Zoos were filled with dead elephants, zebras, lions and wolves still in their enclosures. But a great many of them had escaped with their lives when the bars of their cages had melted away and they had then fled to their deadly freedom.
